OzHub, the Macquarie Telecom-led cloud computing alliance, has come down firmly on the side of Optus over the copyright controversy surrounding Optus TV Now, warning that any moves to change the law "risk branding Australia a global luddite state."
After investing $US17.2b in 2008 to expand its global network, Verizon Business says it is planning further expansion during 2009 in nearly every part of the world.
"Strategic global network plans for 2009 include expansions of private IP/multiprotocol label switching (MPLS), converged packet architecture, submarine cable systems and optical global mesh architecture," the company said.
It is expanding its MPLS network in South Asia, North Asia, Singapore, Japan, Mexico, the United States, Europe and the Middle East, saying that: "The MPLS network also provides the foundation for multinational customers to optimise the cost and effectiveness of operating business processes among multiple locations."
Verizon Business says it will continue expanding its converged packet architecture (CPA) network this year. New CPA locations planned for 2009 include: Japan (Tokyo and Osaka); Taiwan (Taipei); South Korea (Seoul); Hong Kong; Singapore; Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Canberra); and India (Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, New Delhi and Hyderabad).
"CPA enables convergence of services onto a single packet access connection via a simple ethernet interface. This gives customers the ability to move seamlessly from legacy time-division multiplexing (TDM) to packet-based technology, resulting in improved efficiency," Verizon said.
The company is also expanding its global submarine network. The second phase of the Trans-Pacific Express cable is expected to land in Japan in early 2010. Verizon Business claims to be the only US- based company that is an original charter member of the Trans-Pacific Express Consortium. Phase two follows completion in 2008 of the first phase of the 17,000-kilometre network from the US to mainland China, South Korea and Taiwan.
Verizon Business is also a lead member of the Europe India Gateway (EIG) Consortium which is building the first direct, high-bandwidth optical-fibre submarine cable system to connect the United Kingdom, the Middle East and India. It will provide a cable terminal facility in Marseille that will give the EIG direct connectivity to the Verizon Business network in Europe and provide redundancy in cable stations and routing. EIG is scheduled to be ready for service in 2010.
Other major network projects include expansion of its ultra-long-haul network in the US and Europe; deployment of ROADM (reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer) technology used to remotely configure wavelengths on the network; deployment of 40Gbps technology on selected network routes and testing of 100Gbps capabilities "in an effort to move the industry toward production quality 100Gbps in 2010."
