Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Apple could also be doing none of these things, and getting ready to demonstrate something completely different – such is the unpredictability when it comes to anything Apple.
Phil Schiller, Apple’s marketing man, will also be under heavy scrutiny come his Macworld keynote.
Although Schiller will no doubt be well trained in the way that Steve Jobs delivers his keynotes, inevitable comparisons will arise between Schiller’s performance, and those of Steve Jobs in the past.
Inevitable in the same way that any Apple iPhone clone is immediately compared to the iPhone itself, no matter how much better the clones are on paper – for how they actually perform in the hand is what matters most.
This is especially so given that Apple’s interface still hasn’t been properly cloned by anyone, with Apple uniquely offering a “multi-touch” screen to zoom into and out of web pages and photos with two fingers.
All other attempts thus far have been relatively pale imitations, and the danger for Schiller’s keynote is that he – and it – is seen in the same light.
So, having dampened down expectations for Macworld 2009, a big question remains, especially given Jobs’ propensity to offer “one more thing” to his adoring fans.
Even though Apple might not be sending Jobs onto the stage to deliver the keynote, could he turn up at the end, looking healthy and trim, and make a final announcement to truly blow us all away?
Even if Jobs didn’t actually announce anything himself, his appearance on stage could well be the big “one more thing” Apple has to offer as a final surprise at the keynote.
So, Apple, have I just blown your big secret for getting Steve Jobs on stage after all, or is a glorious touch screen enabled Mac netbook your secret surprise for 2009?
We’ll all know in about 3 weeks. Hold onto your hats, everyone.
Apple doesn’t like to disappoint, and even though many are already disappointed with Apple’s decisions regarding Macworld and the Steve Jobs no-show, Steve Jobs himself could prove to be, at Macworld 2009, the ultimate “one more thing” of them all.
