Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
In a 'better late than never' move, AT&T has abandoned its practice of selling the iPhone 3G exclusively through stores. Customers can now purchase Apple's popular handset on the web.
Initial demand for the iPhone 3G coupled with a requirement that the handset be activated in-store led to lengthy queues when it first went on sale earlier this year.
The original iPhone could be activated at home by connecting it to a computer running iTunes.
In a change apparently aimed at Christmas shoppers ("some stockings have all the luck"), AT&T has begun selling the iPhone 3G through its web site.
AT&T is currently offering free overnight shipping on the $US199 8G and $US299 16G models.
When purchased online, the iPhone 3G is delivered in an activated state and buyers must enter a two-year contract with AT&T, so the first-generation trick of buying an iPhone online but never activating it - thereby avoiding the need to agree to the contract - won't work.
So all you gain is the ability to stay away from the store. But that, it must be said, can be a blessing at this time of year as hordes of people jam the malls in search of presents and seasonal gewgaws.
In any case, we have yet to hear of a working software unlock for the iPhone 3G, though some vendors offer SIM carriers that they say allow the use of other carriers' SIMs.
The iPhone 3G is still unavailable through Apple's US online store. The best the company can do online is to continue to offer the iPhone 3G Gift Card, redeemable at any physical Apple Store.
