$99 iPhone not coming after all?

IT Industry - Market

Although the Boy Genius Report (BGR) said that WalMart would possibly be launching a 4GB $99 iPhone sometime this month, new reports say that while WalMart may well be getting ready to sell the iPhone, it won’t be a 4GB version.

Ah, the iPhone rumour mill, where the wheat gets sorted from the chaff and turned into flour.

It’s all a lot of fun, and given Apple’s unpredictable nature, sorting the rumours from the real is an inexact science that plenty o’ pundits like to play with.

One of the most recent iPhone rumours has been that WalMart would soon be selling a 4GB iPhone 3G at the low, low price of US $99.

This would, if true, see the 4GB option re-introduced at a giveaway price, perfect for holding a few albums, a video or two, and lots of juicy iPhone Apps.

The rumour came from the Boy Genius Report, a fantastic site that many follow.

The story was also reported on by fellow iTWire colleague Stephen Withers in an article called “$99 iPhone coming this month”.

Well, the news has come through from MacBlogz.com that its sources say the “4GB iPhone is not happening” and is “just a rumor”.

It’s the word of one tech news site to another... who to believe?

MacBlogz notes that much of what BGR says about the iPhone coming to WalMart appears to be true, but that the 4GB rumour is not.

So is there any hope of a $99 iPhone? Yes, there could well be, just not at 4GB.
