“Rampant” iPhone OS 2.2 issues?

IT Industry - Market

Phone Atlas is reporting “rampant” iPhone OS 2.2 issues for some users, from Wi-Fi problems, to missing apps (including Safari, Camera and third party apps), to problems connecting with iTunes, while others report smooth sailing. Yep, it’s the "iPhone OS update gamble", but whether you’re really experiencing problems or not probably depends on the RDF.

RDF? You know what it is – it’s Steve Jobs’ Reality Distortion Field. But for some iPhone users, the distortion is to the iPhone experience, delivering an updated new reality that is forcing some users to try their luck at downgrading back to iPhone OS 2.1.

As is often the case with an update, not everyone reports success, and some of the issues highlighted over at iPhone Atlas sound very serious, indeed. It prompts me to wonder when iPhone OS 2.2.1 might be hitting the streets.

Calling the problems “rampant”, iPhone Atlas says that some users are experiencing worse EDGE or 3G reception, Wi-Fi problems, apps that have simply disappeared and problems synching with iTunes.

One of the solutions is to go back to iPhone OS 2.1, with iPhone Atlas providing basic instructions on what to do, as well as links to earlier iPhone OS 2.1 firmware versions.

Disappearing apps, including Safari, Camera, all first party apps and a host of third party apps have been reported, something that is naturally quite spooky, with the best solution seemingly being to restore your iPhone with iTunes (to OS 2.2) and then choosing to set up your iPhone as  “new” phone, and not by restoring a previous backup.

Naturally this means re-synchronising your music and apps, but if it brings balance back to the force, then it’s worth doing.

Wi-Fi is also an issue, with the main suggestion being to get your iPhone to “forget” the networks its used to connecting with, and then trying again, although iPhone Atlas does have some other tips.

The iTunes sync issue also has a whole host of suggested fixes which you can read here.

Personally I just chose to “update” my iPhone 2G (and not restore) and so far haven’t experienced any problems. Indeed things seem a little snappier, which is always a good thing, but as I mentioned earlier, if the problems continue, an iPhone OS 2.2.1 update is surely not too far away!
