Toshiba has introduced three new laptop computers with embedded HSPA modems preconfigured to work on Telstra's Next G network.

Toshiba's 3G family which now consists of four models: the new Portégé R500, claimed to be the world's lightest most fully-featured notebook, the Portégé M700 tablet, the Tecra M9, billed as "a rugged desktop replacement," and the Portégé R400 tablet PC.

The R500 achieves its low weight in part by using a solid state 'hard disc drive' (optional with 64GB) or a 160GB hard drive It weighs in at 887 grammes with the solid state drive and retails for $4125.

Toshiba spokeswoman Jo Balfour told iTWire that the company was looking at offering the products configured for use on other 3 networks in Australia. ' The Toshiba proposition is to offer as much
innovation and productivity to as wide an audience as possible so we are investigating with other carriers... however...getting this service up and running is about more than just technology when you take in consideration approvals, process and protocols. [So] we are currently partnered with BigPond as the most comprehensive service provider in Australia."
