Apple and Google fall, Yahoo climbs in consumer ratings

IT Industry - Market

Consumers are less satisfied than with both Apple and Google than they were 12 months ago but Yahoo is being viewed in a more positive light according to a new survey in the US.

According to the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), released by the University of Michigan’s National Quality Research Center yesterday, Apple's phenomenal success in recent times has been a double-edged sword.

Although it still leads the PC sector for customer satisfaction, Apple has seen a decline in customer satisfaction, dropping 5% to a score of 79, just 4 points above the industry average of 75. However, Apple still fares well compared to Dell, which also plunged 5% to register a below average score of 74.

Professor Claes Fornell, head of the ACSI at the University of Michigan, attributed Apple's growth in part to the decline in consumer satisfaction.

"Apple has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years," said Prof Fornell. "As Toyota can attest, it’s not easy to manage quality and customer satisfaction when a company quickly hasto increase production or provide service to a larger number of customers."

Meanwhile in the Internet portals and search space, consumers Yahoo has surprisingly shot ahead of Google in the estimation of consumers. Yahoo has improved 4% to 79 while Google has dropped 4% to register a score of 78. However, the ACSI study points out that Google is still the most popular search engine, although Ask.com has narrowed the gap considerably gaining 6% to register a score of 75. Some consumers have said that Google's has not changed much and is looking stale compared to the home page of Ask.

If there was one company that is looking decidely sick as far as consumers are concerned, it's AOL. In the wake of arguably the biggest security blunder in Internet history, AOL suffered the largest plunge in customer satisfaction, down 10% to register 67, the lowest score in the industry.
