Cognos brings BI to BlackBerry

IT Industry - Market

You're always reading your email on a BlackBerry, so why not use it to keep an eye on key business parameters? Cognos 8 Go! Mobile lets managers watch and interact with the most relevant performance information wherever they are.

Applications used by early adopters include the delivery of sales revenue and other metrics, delivering reports to airline ground crew so they can quickly handle lost luggage inquiries, sending maintenance reports in real time to remote oil rig inspectors, and allowing field technicians to prioritise daily customer service jobs by complexity of the task and severity of the technical problem.

According to Cognos officials, the application takes advantage of BlackBerry features including vibration and ringtones.

"This version of Cognos 8 Go! Mobile uniquely addresses the needs of joint RIM [BlackBerry creator Research In Motion] and Cognos customers who require mission-critical BI information delivered directly to their mobile workforce," said Leah MacMillan, vice president of product marketing, Cognos. "It expands the reach of our proven BI capabilities by empowering employees to securely monitor the pulse of the business remotely and act on key business information in an informed and timely manner."

RIM officials welcomed the arrival of Cognos's product. "Many enterprises are looking for mobile applications that can provide employees with timely and valuable business intelligence for a range of areas including sales force automation, logistics and inventory management," said Jeff McDowell, vice president, global alliances at RIM. “Cognos 8 Go! Mobile can help enterprises realise a significant competitive advantage with its quick access to, and focus on, key performance information."
