Technology and its resultant automation have been cast as the jobs’ bogeyman by regional banking giant ANZ which today announced 1,000 Australian jobs were being axed, and warned that more could follow as a result of further automation.
A key feature of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL5) is support for virtualisation. RHEL5 incorporates the Xen hypervisor, allowing the use of up to four virtualised guests. That limit is removed in the Advanced Platform version, which also provides new capabilities for managing virtualised systems.
Other changes include security, scalability, performance and interoperability improvements. RHEL5 also offers "extensive new hardware support" along with full support for IPv6 networking.
The company is also offering a trio of prepackaged configurations based on Advanced Platform and including consulting and training services. The names are self-explanatory: Red Hat Datacenter Solution, Red Hat Database Availability Solution, and Red Hat High Performance Computing Solution.
Red Hat announced two other initiatives along with the new version of its flagship operating system.
Red Hat Cooperative Resolution Center is intended to work around the finger-pointing that can occur when the root cause of a problem is not clear. Red Hat's message is "When you have a problem, and aren't sure whose software is causing it, start here. We'll work with your other software vendors to find an answer."
Red Hat Exchange (RHX) is an online marketplace for open-source business software that has been pre-integrated with Red Hat's application stack. When RHX goes live during the second quarter, participating companies will include MySQL (database), SugarCRM (customer relationship management) and Alfresco (enterprise content management).
The reasoning here is that the uptake of open source business software has been relatively thin, and Red Hat's guarantee of interoperability and support could change that.
