Ronald Sugar sweetens Apple board

The new director on Apple's board brings engineering and finance experience.

 

Ronald Sugar, a former chairman and CEO of Northrop Grumman, has been appointed to Apple's board.

Despite being an engineer by training, Dr Sugar has previously held CFO positions and will chair AApple's audit and finance committee.

His other business interests include board seats at Chevron, Amgen and Air Lease, and he advises private investment firm Ares Management.

"Ron is an engineer at heart, who then became a very successful business leader. We are very excited to welcome him to Apple's board," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

"In addition to having been the CEO of a high-tech Fortune 100 company, Ron has a PhD in engineering and has been involved in the development of some very sophisticated technology," he noted.

Dr Sugar fills one of thew two vacancies left by the March 2010 death of Jerome York and the August 2009 resignation of Eric Schmidt.

Apple's board currently comprises Bill Campbell (chairman and former CEO of financial software developer Intuit), Millard Drexler (chairman and CEO of clothing retailer J Crew), Al Gore (former Vice President of the United States), Mr Jobs, Andrea Jung (chairman and CEO of cosmetics direct marketer Avon Products), Arthur Levinson (chairman of biotech company Genentech), and Dr Sugar.
