Symantec has completed its $US1.28 billion acquisition of VeriSign's identity and authentication business.
There are several parts to VeriSign's identity and authentication business, including SSL certificate services, PKI services, VeriSign Trust Services, and the VeriSign Identity Protection Authentication Service.
Symantec announced in May a definitive agreement to acquire that part of VeriSign's business for approximately $US1.28 billion in cash. The company intends to use the newly acquired assets to assist in the secure adoption of relatively new computing models such as cloud computing, social networking, mobile computing, and the use of user-owned devices within corporate infrastructure.
For consumers, the company intends to incorporate support for VeriSign user certificates in its Norton products.
"Enterprises and consumers alike expect simple and secure access to information from any device, protection from identity fraud, and online experiences that are user-friendly and hassle-free," said Enrique Salem, Symantec's president and CEO.
"The combination of Symantec's leading security solutions with VeriSign's security products, services and recognition as the most trusted brand online, uniquely positions Symantec to drive the adoption of identity security and restore trust online unlike any other company," he added.
