Apple: record revenue, record Mac sales, profits up

IT Industry - Listed Tech

Record quarterly Mac sales of 3.47 million units, increased iPhone sales, and a successful iPad launch have all contributed to record revenue and substantial year-on-year profit growth at Apple.

Apple has posted record quarterly revenue of $US15.7 billion for the period ending June 26, 2010 (Apple's third fiscal quarter).

This was driven by the sale of 3.47 million Macs (a new record, and 33% up on 3Q09), 8.4 million iPhones (61% up on the year-ago quarter), and 3.27 million iPads (introduced during the quarter).

Overall Mac sales growth was generated by the portable segment which was up 40%. The education market does not appear to have ended its love affair with the Mac: CFO Peter Oppenheimer claimed record Mac sales to the education sector.

The overall increase in Mac sales was greater than estimates for the PC market as a whole. Gartner reported overall growth of 20.7%, and IDC's figure was 22.4%.

And iPhone growth handsomely exceeded IDC's 38% estimate of overall smartphone sales growth.
