IBM also stands to benefit from the continuing strength of the China economy though its 6 percent stake in Lenovo, which acquired the former IBM PC business in 2005. Lenovo loses the right to use the IBM brand in 2010.

Microsoft appears to be looking for a way of becoming less reliant on its legacy desktop and server software business, but so far without success. Microsoft's online division lost nearly half a billion dollars - these are the people who think they can run Yahoo!'s search operations better than Yahoo! can.

Yahoo is scheduled to report its quarterly results next week.
