EMC buys Mozy operator

EMC has acquired Berkeley Data Systems, the operator of the Mozy online backup service.

MozyHome offers unlimited online backup to home Windows users for $US4.95 per month. MozyPro - with support for Windows Server, SQL Server, Exchange, open files, and centralised management and administration - costs $US3.95 per computer plus $US0.50 per gigabyte stored.

A Mac OS X client for MozyHome is in public beta.

Mozy protects data by using 448-bit Blowfish encryption.

"Mozy's technology and online delivery model has proven itself to be one of the industry's most admired offerings for customers looking to safely and cost-effectively backup and recover their digital information stored on desktops, laptops, and remote office servers," said Tom Heiser, EMC senior vice president, corporate development and new ventures.

"We will continue to invest in Mozy's full portfolio of online backup and recovery services and advance the Mozy brand in the marketplace," he added.

The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
