The Melbourne Accelerator Program at the University of Melbourne's Melbourne School of Engineering has selected four teams out of 32 that applied for the 2012 Melbourne Accelerator Program. Open to students, alumni and academic staff, the program offers access to resources and mentoring, with the goals of maximising the chance of success, accelerating the start-ups' progress, and creating a culture of entrepreneurship at the university.

“By involving mentors in the program, our students, academics and alumni can gain unlimited exposure to a range of experts who can guide, advise and support them through the journey of innovation," said Professor Iven Mareels, dean of the Melbourne School of Engineering.

THe four participants are 121cast (personalised Internet radio station delivering information such as calendar events and social media content via text to speech as well as conventional audio content), UniSquare (an Internet social platform for university students), VenueMob (an Internet booking system for venue owners), and a team working on a remote area power system to enable people in those areas to get the most from the available electricity supply.
