NBN Co is looking for service providers to test its planned multicast service, scheduled to go live in Q3 of calendar 2012 in those areas where the FTTH rollout has been completed.
Multicast enables service providers to deliver the same content to multiple end users simultaneously without having to deliver a separate copy from their own servers to each end user. NBN Co revealed details of the planned service in August. The primary application is expected to be popular IPTV content that will have many simultaneous viewers but it can also be used for the distribution of software updates.
For example NBN Co suggests: "In the future, when thousands of electricity smart-meters are connected to the NBN and a firmware update is required."
The multicast sandpits will be available progressively through December starting with Melbourne on 8 December, then Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and finally Brisbane on 20 December. They will be available until April 2012. NBN Co says that priority will be given to current or prospective service providers that are running or planning to run a commercial IPTV service in Australia.
