Planning to apply for a top-level domain? There's something you should read first.

The domain name system is heading for one of its biggest changes with the 2012 introduction of almost unlimited global top-level domains (gTLDs).

But applying for a gTLD is a much more complicated process than registering a regular domain under an existing gTLD or country code TLD (ccTLD), so ICANN has created a site that sets out the information applicants need to know, including the Applicant Guidebook that "specifies what documents and information are required to apply; the financial and legal commitments; and what to expect during the application and evaluation periods."

"This microsite will be an invaluable resource," said Rod Beckstrom, ICANN president and CEO. "It will be the definitive source for any and all information relating to the gTLD program, for applicants, potential applicants or simply the curious."

"If an organisation wants to determine exactly what is involved in applying for a gTLD and subsequently running an Internet registry, ICANN's new website should be the first stop in their fact-finding journey," he added.

Applications for new gTLDs will be accepted from 12 January 2012.
