$3 million State Government funding for IBES

IT Industry - Development

The Victorian Government will stump up $3 million of the $21 million funding for the University of Melbourne's Institute for a Broadband-Enabled Society.

The Victorian Government has announced that it will provide $3 million funding for the University of Melbourne's Institute for a Broadband-Enabled Society (IBES).

"The continuing support for IBES allows the Institute to build upon its successes of the past two years and continue to foster multi-disciplinary research in partnership with industry," said IBES director Rod Tucker.

"The $21 million investment cements IBES at the forefront of broadband research in Australia and will drive greater innovation in the development of broadband applications to harness the potential of the National Broadband Networks," Prof Tucker added.

IBES officials noted that the $21 million funding will support the creation of 38 new jobs over the next three years. If it was just a job creation scheme, it would be on the expensive side, averaging nearly $185,000 per job per year. But an IBES spokesperson has pointed out that salaries only account for approximately 30% of the Institute's expenditure.

Other organisations funding IBES include the University of Melbourne, Google, and Microsoft.
