IT Industry - Development

Seagate has shipped more than one million self-encrypting notebook and enterprise hard drives.

Self-encrypting drives (SEDs) help keep data secure without the overhead of encryption software. The encrypted data makes it possible to securely reuse or dispose of unwanted drives by avoiding the need to overwrite or destroy them.

Seagate has announced it has now shipped more than one million self-encrypting notebook and enterprise hard drives. Dell, Fujitsu, Hitachi, IBM, LSI and Network Appliance use Seagate enterprise SEDs in their products, and Dell, Lenovo and Panasonic are shipping or qualifying notebooks with Seagate SEDs as options.

Company officials said that the Savvio, Cheetah, Constellation and Momentus SEDs are FIPS 140-2 certified, allowing their use by US and Canadian federal agencies, and various other organisations. Furthermore, everal major customers are now qualifying Momentus SEDs that are compliant with the Trusted Computing Group's Opal specification.
