iPrimus connects its first school to NBN

IT Industry - Development

A Catholic school in Smithton, Tasmania is the first to be connected to the NBN by ISP iPrimus. A 'go live' ceremony attended by the Tasmanian Premier and others was held today.

St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary School in Smithton, Tasmania has been connected to the NBN by iPrimus. The 128-student school now has a 100Mbps Internet connection.

It is the first Catholic school and the second Tasmanian school to be connected to the NBN. The first was Circular Head Christian School, which was connected by Internode in July. A third school is expected to connect to the NBN shortly.

"Thanks to the National Broadband Network, many more people including schools like St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary will have access to the kinds of services and applications previously only available to large companies buying dedicated infrastructure," said state Premier David Bartlett.

Tasmania submitted a proposal under the original NBN RFP process, partly because it had the lowest proportions of households with broadband connections in the nation.

The greater bandwidth will allow the students to participate in HD videoconferences with other schools and educational organisations, and it will also heavier concurrent Internet use.
