Construction needs cloud flexibility

Australia’s embattled construction sector could benefit from cloud based information systems that can be switched on and off in lockstep with individual projects – with the exception of those organisations based in remote areas like the Kimberleys.

NetSuite disaster centre opens this quarter

IT Industry - Development

Cloud computing specialist NetSuite has released a new version of its OneWorld ERP system which is targeted at multinational organisations and provides integration with Google Apps. It has also confirmed that its new disaster recovery centre on the East Coast of the US will be opened this quarter.

OneWorld, which is the company's cloud based ERP solution currently represented 30 per cent of new business according to Zach Nelson, NetSuite president and CEO, who is visiting Australia. He said that the rising demand for the company's financial and ERP cloud based solutions had led to growth for the company of 83 per cent over the last two years and forecast revenues would this year reach $US190 million.

The company's sights are set on what Mr Nelson describes as the 'Fortune 5 million' - companies traditionally a little too large to run their business on tools such as MYOB, but too small for Oracle (ironically Oracle boss Larry Ellison is NetSuite's largest single shareholder).  According to Mr Nelson; 'In most cases we are replacing something - but the profile of the customer is changing radically.'

David Mills, founder of the Chef's Toolbox which now uses OneWorld in its operations in Australia, New Zealand and the US, said that he had abandoned Great Plains' software in favour of the NetSuite cloud based solution which was up and running within six weeks.

According to Mr Nelson while one to two years ago most NetSuite prospects were at the lower end of the scale, there were now many companies; 'Moving off the mid range classic stone-age hairball. The mid market is starting to churn.

'Most systems haven't been touched since 2000. Ten years is the lifespan for good wine and bad software,' said Mr Nelson

NetSuite's cloud offering is underpinned by its data centre on the West Coast of the US. Although it regularly floats the idea of opening other regional data centres (Sydney and Singapore were again canvassed today) it has relied on just one main data centre to date.
