Equinix to shell out $US65m on new Sydney data centre

IT Industry - Development

Global data centre operator, Equinix is to build a third data centre in Sydney

The first phase of its third so-called 'International Business Exchange', SY3 IBX, will add 1,000 cabinets at a cost of $US65m and is targeted for opening during the second quarter of 2011.

The managing director of Equinix Australia, Darren Mann, said:  'Our second Sydney IBX data centre(SY2), which officially opened in early 2009, has filled ahead of our expectations. We are confident that this new capacity offering will also result in similar strong demand from both local and multinational corporate, government and financial services entities that leverage the Sydney metropolitan area as a key location for business.'

The new centre will be located south of Sydney and will have a total capacity for more than 3,000 'cabinet equivalents' when all of the phases are fully built out. It will support a standard power density of 4kVA per cabinet and much higher densities where required.

It will have direct fibre connectivity to Equinix's SY1 and SY2 data centre campus, which is located less than one mile away and immediate access to over 50 network providers at the existing facilities in Sydney.
