ICANN to reconsider .XXX proposal

IT Industry - Development

The proposal for a .XXX global top-level domain is back on the agenda following the deliberations of an ICANN review panel.

As long ago as 2004, domain registry ICM applied to ICANN to operate the .XXX global top-level domain (gTLD). The idea was to provide a gTLD for use by the adult entertainment industry.

Apart from providing an opportunity to sell more domain names, there were suggestions that such an arrangement would make it easier for concerned parents to keep this type of material out of their homes simply by blocking the domain at their routers.

That assumed existing domains (eg those in the .com space) weren't used in parallel with the .XXX equivalent.

Views expressed at the 2007 ICANN meeting in Lisbon showed there was no consensus on the issue, with even an adult entertainment trade association speaking against the proposal.

ICANN went on to reject the application later that year.
