Either way, the research found 65% of SMEs were using at least one hosted service.

Not surprisingly, the most common was a hosted web site. What was surprising was that only 39% of respondents used web hosting, with 49% running their site from an in house server. That leaves almost one-eighth of SMEs with no web site at all.

Equal top was web conferencing, which was quite evenly split (39% vs 40%) between hosted and on site.

These two applications were followed by CRM (31% hosted, 52% on site), email (29% vs 67%) server (28% vs 58%), filesharing/collaboration (23% vs 56%), and backup (22% vs 71%)

That last one's a bit scary, as it seems to mean that 7% of SMEs aren't backing up at all.

"Over the last five years, we have seen nearly 40 percent growth in usage of hosted services," said Michael Korbacher, director of EMEA software plus services in the communications sector at Microsoft.
