1 in 10 web surfers now on Windows 7 but only at home

IT Industry - Development

Just three months after its general availability to the public, Microsoft's latest Windows 7 operating system now accounts for 10% of all Internet browsing. Yet corporations are still unmoved.

Website netmarketshare.com tracks browser trends, search engine referrals and operating system share across 160 million Internet users per month.

The site now shows that Windows 7 has now double digits, with 10% of web users operating on the new platform.

Primarily these visitors have come from earlier versions of Windows, with MacOS and Linux proportions remaining relatively stable at 5.16% and 1.02% respectively.

Interestingly, the overall Windows share has diminished slightly from 92.77% in September prior to the Windows 7 release, to 92.00% today. The reduction can be accounted for by growth in the mobile market with Android and the iPhone, among others, achieving greater popularity.

Perhaps unsurprisingly the greatest penetration of Windows 7 is in the Redmond, Washington area. Within the city of Redmond some 42% of Internet users came from Windows 7.

However, the home market is different from the corporate end. In July 2009 a survey indicated nearly 60% of businesses had no plans to deploy Windows 7.
