Quick update to Parallels Desktop squashes bugs

IT Industry - Development

A new build of Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac fixes a laundry list of bugs and delivers various improvements.

Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac build 5.0.9308 delivers performance improvements in multiple areas, including USB mass storage, shared folders, startup, and video.

Many of the fixes involve graphics. Aero is now available by default on MacBook and Mac mini models fitted with Intel GMA X3100 or GMA950 chips, and a list of program-specific issues (eg, texture corruption in AutoCAD) have been addressed.

Coherence and Crystal modes (which provide tighter integration of Windows applications within the normal Mac OS X environment) have also been tidied up in various areas.

The new build includes experimental support Mandriva 2010 and also for Xorg 1.7 in Fedora 12 VMs. Auto-detection of Open SUSE 11.1 installation media is provided, along with fixes for issues affecting Ubuntu 8.04, Topogun 1.05, and GNOME.

Parallels Transporter - the utility that migrates existing VMware, Virtual PC or VirtualBox VMs to Parallels Desktop - has also been updated to improve the performance of VMs from VMware Fusion and to avoid the unnecessary disabling of Aero.

The new build comes around six weeks after the release of Parallels Desktop 5.

Parallels Desktop 5 costs $US79.95/$A98.54 by electronic delivery, or $A119.95 (inc GST) as a physical product from Australian distributor Conexus.
