Speed boost and more from VMware Fusion 3.0.1

IT Industry - Development

Despite the minor update status implied by the 3.0.1 version number, an update to VMware Fusion delivers new features and improvements as well as bug fixes.

Fusion, VMware's virtualisation product for Mac OS X, has been updated to version 3.0.1.

New features include a 64-bit code for the networking subsystem, the ability to import standalone VHD virtual disks and Parallels Desktop 5 virtual machines, and full support for Ubuntu 9.10 'Karmic Koala' (including Unity, which allows windows from the guest OS to appear directly on the Mac OS X desktop rather than within a window representing the guest desktop).

Performance improvements include a 20-80% boost for 3D applications (with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard as the host), improved playback in Windows Media Player (with Vista or Windows 7 as the guest), and the elimination of various slowdowns (involving old versions of VMware Tools, Spotlight, Zone Alarms AV, or Outlook 2007).

VMware recommends against the use of AVG Free 9 with Fusion, as it "takes lots of CPU and makes the virtual machine sluggish," according to VMware's Pat Lee.

In all, version 3.0.1 delivers more than 50 new features, improvements or bug fixes.

It is the first update that can take advantage of Fusion 3's built-in updater as an alternative to manually downloading and installing the new version. Whichever way the update is obtained, it is still necessary to manually update or install the latest VMware Tools in existing virtual machines in order to obtain all the improvements.
