Networking giant Cisco has announced multiple new products across it business collaboration line, including new unified communications tools. It is also challenging Microsoft in the hosted e-mail category with a new WebEx Mail, as well as other social networking tools.
Cisco pushed forward on two fronts with today's announcement at the company's Collaboration Summit.
The Unified Communication System (UCS) Release 8.0 incorporates Cisco's Intercompany Media Engine, a way of maximizing the efficiency of IP-network-based communications.
The Media Engine tracks video and voice IP calls and learns the commonly used IP routes for traffic. From then on, the Engine automatically connects calls within the recognized network.
UCS 8.0 also makes it possible to set up a virtualized environment for running unified communications applications such as Unified Presence, Voice Portal, and Unified Communications Manger.
The company also introduced Unified Personal Communicator 8.0, a multimedia desktop client for IM, visual voicemail, conferencing, and other services.
Supporting all this is a new Mobile Communicator version that provides iPhones and BlackBerries with access to the Cisco unified communications system, as well as the new 9900 and 8900 series of IP phones.
The company also launched new tools for e-mail and social team-building. For more on Cisco's announcements, see Page 2.
