OzHub, the Macquarie Telecom-led cloud computing alliance, has come down firmly on the side of Optus over the copyright controversy surrounding Optus TV Now, warning that any moves to change the law "risk branding Australia a global luddite state."
It looks like computer users in the UK are the first to get their hands on Windows 7 after Microsoft confirms it has brought forward shipments to avoid the planned national postal strike.
Although Windows 7 is officially being launched on Thursday 22nd October, some customers in the UK got a shock when the postman knocked on the door Monday and delivered the new Microsoft Operating System three days early.
People have been posting messages on Internet forums such as the one operated by PC Advisor magazine reporting delivery yesterday and today.
"I got my 2 copies of Windows 7 this morning from PC World" one said, others stating that orders from the likes of Dixons and Currys had also turned up on Monday. This in stark contrast to earlier statements from retailers who insisted that Windows 7 would not ship until October 21st.
Indeed, there has been a lot of fuss from retailers keen to cash in on the launch to make up for recession hit IT sales of late. PC World, for example, is opening the flagship Tottenham Court Road store in London at midnight on Wednesday 21st to allow eager shoppers to get their hands on the software. Although they will no longer now be amongst the first in the country to do so.
Microsoft has confirmed that it has sanctioned the early shipment for UK users, and that it did so in order to beat the likely national postal strike which is set to cause chaos across the country when Royal Mail workers stop working on Thursday and Friday.
A Microsoft spokesperson admits that "Oct 22 sees both the launch of Windows 7 and a planned postal strike in the UK. In order to minimise the impact on customers, Microsoft has authorised those partners who participated in the pre-order programme to ship Windows 7 to those customers who pre-ordered it".
