Apple lists Snow Leopard incompatibilities

IT Industry - Development

Addressing ongoing concerns about software that might be incompatible with Snow Leopard, Apple has posted a page describing known issues and how the OS handles them. The company has also posted a list of directly supported scanners and printers.

The early reports that Adobe Creative Suite 3 might be "unsupported" by Snow Leopard highlighted concerns about which software might be broken by an upgrade to the new version of Mac OS X.

The concerns about CS3 were apparently overblown, but it is known that some software, mostly older versions, won't work properly with Snow Leopard.

Apple's support page explains that some software will be moved to a special Incompatible folder during the Snow Leopard installation process. Users can then set about upgrading those packages.

Other software may not be moved to that folder, but will nevertheless be blocked from opening and a warning message presented. The page does not explain the relationship between the two groups of software -- i.e., whether the blocked software is in the Incompatible folder and if not, why not.

Among the moved software are Parallels Desktop 2.5 -- a two-year-old version of the virtualization package -- and Norton AntiVirus and McAfee VirusScan antimalware programs.

Most of the rest are drivers and plugins, also old.
