A survey of the employment history of recent university graduates released today shows that computer science grads fared significantly worse on the jobs front than just about all other fields of study. In fact they were just marginally more successful than acting graduates in finding full time work.
The survey of 2003 graduates by the Graduates Careers Council of Australia found that, four months after graduating, 21% of computer science postgraduate diploma recipients had still not found full-time employment, compared to an average of 10.7% among the 49 fields of study surveyed. The result was even worse for Masters degree holders, with 30.8% of computer science Masters graduates not able to find full time work compared to the average of 12.5%.
Computer science PhD recipients fared slightly better than their less qualified counterparts, with only 15.7% being out of full-time work compared to the average of 12.4%. However, the results for this category was based on a much smaller sample of graduates than the other two categories.
The results of the survey show that computer science graduates had about as much success finding work as graduates in visual performing arts, who were also in the 30% unemployed range. This does not sound very encouraging for students contemplating computer science as a career choice. At least being an unemployed actor has an air of glamour.
