Microsoft trawls 40 million Chinese graduates for top talent

IT Industry - Development

“Every year China graduates 40 million people, twice India’s output, and five times that of the US. One of the primary reasons we are there is to recruit top talent and in China the brightest minds go into engineering,” said Dr Zhang.

He said that although Microsoft’s Chinese laboratories were initially established to conduct basic research, their remit had since expanded to include incubation projects and product development.

Today 80% of the labs’ efforts went into product development, with 10% invested in both basic research with a five year plus horizon, and incubation projects with a 2-5 year horizon.

Dr Zhang said the Chinese labs had also forged strong links with about a dozen Australian universities, investing in collaborative research projects, and singling out the Universities of Queensland, Melbourne and Sydney for special mention.
