Microsoft turns the spotlight on Silverlight 3

IT Industry - Development

Microsoft officials claim that Silverlight 3 provides a solution for search engine optimisation issues by making it possible to automatically mirror database-driven RIA content into HTML that is easily indexed by the leading search engines.

Changes aimed at improving developer productivity include additional controls and data validation.

Performance improvements in Silverlight 3 applications stem from features including library caching on the client, client-server communication in binary XML. and support for direct communication between two application son the same client without server involvement.

Silverlight 3 allows the creation of applications that run outside the browser but within a sandbox. Administrator privileges are not required to install a Silverlight desktop application.

These applications look like regular software in that they can appear in the Start menu or Windows 7 Superbar. Silverlight provides an auto-update mechanism, as well as a caching facility to allow continued operation if Internet connectivity is lost.

In related news, Microsoft released a preview version of Expression Blend 3, its user-interface design tool.

New features include Photoshop and Illustrator import (including Photoshop layer support), SketchFlow (for prototyping), and the ability to add interactivity to an application without requiring code to be written.
