Although external hard drive units promising 1 TB (terabyte) of space have been around for a while, they have used two 500Gb hard drives in the past. Now that 1TB hard drives are actually here, new external units featuring only one internal hard drive have come onto the market, with the Mercury Elite-AL Pro from OWC coming in at US $599 retail.

It has both Firewire 400 and 800, naturally comes with USB 2.0 and even has an external Serial ATA (eSATA) connection should you desire it. Firewire 800 users can expected transfer rates of 80Mbps while an eSATA connection can transfer a whopping at 1500 megabytes per second!

The “Intech Hard Disk Speedtools” software and the “ProSoft Engineering Data Backup” are also included with the product.
