Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
BitTorrent, developer of the peer-to-peer file sharing protocol that has just secured $US20m of new funding, has acquired µTorrent, developer of a client software that implements the BitTorrent protocol and says it plans to incorporate a BitTorrent client in TVs. mobile phones and other non-PC platforms.
"BitTorrent recognises µTorrent's (pronounced micro torrent) exceptionally well-written codebase and robust user community," said Bram Cohen, CEO and cofounder of BitTorrent. "Ludvig Strigeus, the developer of µTorrent, clearly put a significant amount of time into optimising the client, which has already been widely adopted by the BitTorrent community as a safe and efficient implementation of the BitTorrent protocol."
BitTorrent says that, following the acquisition, patented content delivery innovations made by BitTorrent will be integrated in the µTorrent client in a manner that will remain seamless to the community of users.
"Ultimately, the integration of best-of-breed BitTorrent technology will result in an improved client and an enhanced user experience. It will also accelerate BitTorrent's plans to provide high-performance content delivery services that power websites seeking the most efficient platform for distributing large, high-quality files." BitTorrent said.
"Lastly, the incorporation of µTorrent's lightweight codebase strengthens the adoption of BitTorrent technology in embedded systems, including televisions, mobile phones and other non-PC platforms."
When BitTorrent announced its new funding earlier this month, it said it planned to sue the funds to get its technology onto other web sites.
