Sold for $450k: Norwood's $23m of Bluetooth R&D

IT Industry - Deals

Norwood announced the commercial availability of EnterpriseMobility, its "wireless solution for affordable in-building communication" in 2002. EnterpriseMobility users are able to make and receive calls and view applications on their PDA or mobile phone from anywhere in the office by connecting over Bluetooth to the fixed line network. This functionality was achieved with much investment in software to enable communication to be handed off between bluetooth access points in a network.

O'Donnell told iTWire he thought that Jtech would "do very very well" out of the deal, and all indications are that this will be the case. Jtech was appointed a reseller of Norwood’s products earlier this year and in September completed the integration of EnterpriseMobility into its Genesis Paging System, to create an new product: Genesis Blue.

According to Norwood "Jtech Australia pursued development of the Genesis Blue system because of their belief that the hands free duplex communication it provides adds enormous value to their existing client base of over 4,000 of which are across Australia and New Zealand, and Jtech Inc products are used in over 50,000 sites around the world."

The Genesis paging system is used in thousands of sites around the world, including major hotel chains such as Accor, Sheratons, Hiltons, Four Seasons Hotels and in Australia dominates the hotel, casino and club markets for on site paging and communications. Genesis software is used in the White House in Washington DC by George W Bush for internal on site paging and communications needs, and the system was supplied and installed by Jtech Australia Pty Ltd.

Genesis Blue is designed to compete with and replace other paging systems as well as DECT handsets. According to Norwood, "The product is specifically aimed at the hospitality industry and the retail market, as well as healthcare and general industry markets. The system interfaces to the customers existing infrastructure such as POS, security, duress, fire alarms, and building management systems to then send alert messages to Genesis or Genesis Blue (voice to text)."

When the integration was announced Jtech said it intended to market Genesis Blue to its existing customers in hospitality, healthcare and other new development markets all around the world, via its existing distribution channels and affiliates. It said it had already secured sales with one of Australia’s largest major retail chains, a major casino group, as well as several large clubs.

Jtech Australia has subsidiaries and affiliates in New Zealand, South Africa, Dubai, UK, Europe and USA where it plans to on-sell and market its Genesis Blue products to their perspective markets. Jtech Australia is a subsidiary of Jtech inc, a wholly owned by company fully owned by New York Stock Exchange listed Micros Fidelio which has offices in 55 countries.
