However it does have 1.7 million CDMA customers on its CDMA network that will have to be migrated to another network by that date: if all goes to plan with the new 3G network the CDMA network will be turned off by then.
Speaking at Telstra's investor day briefing on 6 October, David Moffatt, group managing director Enterprise and Government, said that 10 percent of Telstra's total postpaid cellular subscriber were now on 3G and that 3G accounted for seven percent of Telstra's total cellular customer base. He predicted hat this figure would be 25 percent by June 2008.
Hutchison had just over one million 3G customers at 30 June 2006. However at the company's annual results announcement in late August, CEO Kevin Russell was bragging about a different figure: "In recent days, our 3G post-paid base has passed one million, which, we believe, positions us as the number three post-paid mobile operator in Australia (ie ahead of Vodafone)." Optus and Vodafone have not revealed 3G numbers.
Telstra is also aiming to boost the percentage of mobile revenues coming from data, from 18 percent in June 2006 to 28 percent in June 2008.
