Smart energy networks provider, Silver Spring Networks, has been selected by New Zealand utility, Unison, to deploy its smart grid platform across an area in the north island covering Hawke’s Bay, Rotorua and Taupo.

Silver Spring’s standards-based IPv6 networking solution will be deployed with the smart grid roll out expected to deliver improved reliability and service for consumers, provide enhanced management of power grid assets, and enable greater overall energy efficiency.

“Unison is deploying a smart grid infrastructure upon which it can deliver future innovations to customers and is helping establish New Zealand as a global benchmark for modern, efficient, and smarter energy networks,” Silver Spring CEO, Scott Lang said.

According to Unison Group Chief Executive, Ken Sutherland, Silver Spring’s standards-based infrastructure will allow the company to leverage a single platform to provide many smart grid applications and solutions.

“Linked in to our fibre backbone, Silver Spring’s networking platform will become the cornerstone for our smart grid by enabling real-time communication with network devices, as well as real-time monitoring of the status and quality of customer supply.”

Scott Lang said the deployment leveraged Silver Spring’s Gen4 networking technology, providing increased performance, reliability, and security, and supported a range of solutions and applications focused on increasing power grid performance and improving energy efficiency.
