Lucent to buy Mobilitec to boost mobile content delivery offering

IT Industry - Deals

Lucent Technologies is to acquire privately held Mobilitec, a provider of content management software for wireless service providers.
Lucent says it intends to integrate the Mobilitec mPower product into its application products "to enable intelligent, personalised context-aware content delivery and targeted advertising" enhancing its portfolio of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and Mobility (3G) applications. According to Lucent, Mobilitec has already sold th mPower platform to 20 cellular operators who between them have more than 300 million subscribers. These include Vodafone, Orange Israel and M1.

The Mobilitec mPower product is claimed to provide a single platform that supports all content and media types, such as firewall and security software, ring tones, games, music and videos. It "manages the complete content life cycle by offering software for processing submissions from a content provider, content management in catalogues, digital rights management, rendering to ensure content is formatted for the subscriber's wireless device, a Web-style page that can serve as the carrier's "storefront," and a delivery mechanism."

Lucent says that mPower will make it possible for service providers to offer special promotions on their Web storefronts that are personalised based on content, profiles, preferences, location and availability, which can be targeted by device or user segment, and forwarded by recipients to their buddy lists to support viral marketing.

Mobilitec, which has 70 employees worldwide and R&D in Israel, will become part of Lucent's applications business and the mPower product will be marketed as part of Lucent's applications portfolio and service delivery platform (SDP).
