Japanese companies Oki Data and Toshiba Tec have announced a technology-sharing and product-development partnership focusing on the multifunction device market.

A deal between Oki Data and Toshiba Tec will see joint development of a new A4 multifunction device designed with an eye on the managed print services (MPS) market. The device will use Oki's print engine with controllers from Toshiba.

The two companies have agreed a technology swap, which will allow Toshiba to build MFDs based on Oki's LED printheads, while Oki will use technology from Toshiba to deliver MPS.

"The global printer market has shown ever-growing need for services that enhance productivity and reduce costs, such as managed print services," company officials said in a joint statement.

"For the customer base targeted by the partner companies, these trends spell the need for a comprehensive line of product offerings that meet a broad range of office printing needs. To meet this need, the partners must overcome the challenges of achieving the high technological standards required to create a diverse, up-to- date product line, while minimising development period and cost."
