ICANN to accept new gTLD applications from 12 January

IT Industry - Deals

ICANN says that applications for new generic top level domain names (gTLD) will open on schedule on 12 January.

The gTLD program - approved by the ICANN board in June 2011 -  will greatly expand the current number of 22 top-level domains to include almost any word or name or any combination of characters in any language.

However new gTLDs are not intended for every company or organisation because running a gTLD means an applicant is committing to run an Internet registry - an expensive and highly technical operation.

ICANN CEO, Rod Beckstrom confirmed on the ICANN blog that applications would be accepted as planned from 12 January saying: "Our executive team met with Michael Salazar, new gTLD program director, to review ICANN's readiness to open the application window for the new generic top-level domain program on Thursday, 12 January, as planned.
