New Zealand telco Chorus has selected Huawei equipment to increase the capacity of its rural fibre cables.

Chorus will use Huawei coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) equipment, specifically the OptiX OSN 1800, to increase the capacity of its existing rural fibre network to schools, roadside cabinets and mobile base stations.

"Huawei's CWDM will help us reliably increase the capacity on our existing network, without the need to deploy additional fibre cables," said Chris Dyhrberg, general manager of network build at Chorus.

"Proven technologies such as these will help the Crown's RBI (Rural Broadband Initiative) investment go further, extending the reach of world-class broadband beyond the agreed targets."
