Construction needs cloud flexibility

Australia’s embattled construction sector could benefit from cloud based information systems that can be switched on and off in lockstep with individual projects – with the exception of those organisations based in remote areas like the Kimberleys.

Cruising with Silver Peak WAN deal

IT Industry - Deals

Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises Australian fleet, has optimised its satellite WAN connectivity on three of its ships with Silver Peak data centre class WAN optimisation appliances.
The ships, Pacific Dawn, Pacific Jewel, and Pacific Pearl, rely on the satellite WAN to access applications, transfer files, and communicate between ships and the head office data centre located in Sydney, and to overcome slow ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore WAN performance over the 756 Kbps IP-based satellite connections, Carnival Australia has deployed the Silver Peak solution.

Silver Peak Australia's Wayne Neich, said satellite wide area network (WAN) connections are plagued with bandwidth limitations, latency, and packet loss, and Carnival Australia had solved these challenges by optimising its satellite WAN connectivity with Silver Peak data centre class WAN optimisation appliances for the three ships.

'To overcome slow ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore WAN performance over the 756 Kbps IP-based satellite connections, Carnival Australia deployed Silver Peak NX-series WAN optimisation appliances on ships and in the data centre to accelerate CIFS and FTP for file transfers, HTTP/S for Internet traffic, RDP for remote administration, and IBM Lotus Notes and Domino for messaging and collaboration.'

According to Neich, deployment of the solution improved staff efficiencies, eliminated IT frustrations from applications frequently hanging, and accelerated the previously long file transfers and data replication scenarios.  'The Silver Peak deployment has also ruled out the need for a costly upgrade in satellite WAN bandwidth.'

A Carnival Australia IT spokesperson said the Silver Peak WAN optimisation appliances reduced the packet loss and significantly improved the reliability of the satellite connections, and the company had selected Silver Peak based on 'industry-leading scale, ease-of-use, and unique ability to optimize all traffic and applications over the company's satellite WAN infrastructure.'

'Silver Peak is a very good fit for our unique environment that spans both land and sea. Silver Peak's innovative WAN acceleration solutions improve our ability to streamline our business and IT operations, both on and off our ships.'
