AARNet - the network serving Australia's universities and research organisations - has its first school customer served via the NBN.
The Cathederal School in Townsville is the first school to be connected via the NBN by AARNet. Using the NBN to connect schools not served by its own network is a new venture for AARNet.
The Cathederal School now has a 100/40 Mbps link to the Internet. Actual speeds up to 95.02/32.50 Mbps have been measured.
"The connection of our first NBN customer signifies an important step in expanding AARNet's reach," said AARNet CEO Chris Hancock.
"We can now deliver high-speed broadband services to schools in areas serviced by the NBN, providing a real opportunity for Australian students to access technologies and content that bring the curriculum to life. This will benefit our university shareholders enormously and it opens the opportunities for James Cook University to collaborate in real time with institutions like The Cathedral School."
