EnergyAustralia picks Cisco network gear for smart grid

EnergyAustralia, the largest energy network in Australia with three million customers, has selected Cisco switches and routers designed for smart grid applications as the infrastructure platform for the delivery of a range of business-critical services to the major substations across its electricity distribution network.

The products are the first offerings from Cisco in its Connected Grid portfolio of smart grid communications products, launched in May 2010. According to Cisco, "These '¦ purpose-built, ruggedised routers and switches form a resilient, manageable and highly secure network'¦for the utility substation to integrate IP-based communications with the power grid for intelligent grid monitoring and control'¦

"Together, the Cisco Connected Grid routers and switches will help EnergyAustralia improve the reliability of the power supply by detecting and analysing faults quicker as well as decreasing response times'¦[and] help EnergyAustralia plan and develop energy management solutions and better integrate renewable energy into the grid."
