Logica trams it in Victoria

IT Industry - Deals

IT services provider,  Logica, has been selected by Melbourne’s metropolitan light rail operator, Yarra Trams to replace the company’s supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) platform, which Logica says will allow better monitor and control supply across the rail traction power network.

According to Logica, the new SCADA system provides Yarra Trams with greater integration to other business systems providing “enhanced transparency between fleet operations and electrical operations teams.”

Yarra Trams’ director projects, Sozos Pavli said that “improved access to a wider range of data will enable a proactive and faster response to potential problems in our power network, resulting in greater business efficiency. It will bring us close to real-time management, as well as providing greater control over our carbon emissions.”

Pavli said Logica was selected to implement and maintain the system for 10 years following a tough bid process. “This is a technically challenging project and we required a reliable partner that will upgrade our control centre with minimum disruption, with the expertise to integrate new technology with our existing business systems. Melbournians are turning to public transport in an effort to be greener and avoid traffic congestion, so it is vital for us to ensure a consistent and efficient service for our passengers.”

Pavli said the overall upgrade will provide advanced applications that enable control room operators to quickly view network connectivity, equipment and supply status, manage work permits, and check the network for potential operating transgressions that may put the supply of reliable power at risk.

Logica will supply the new SCADA platform based on its MOSAIC™ SCADA technology and manage the entire integration and migration process. The IT services provider will also supply 66 new remote telemetry units (RTUs), which allows Yarra Trams to remotely manipulate the network, saving time and creating a safer work method for network technicians. Logica said the units will be retro-fitted into existing field wiring to “considerably cut costs and time for installation.” The entire project is scheduled for completion by mid 2011.

Robert Heaton, management consultant for transport at Logica, said “the existing systems had reached end of life and had become too costly and risky to maintain. Moreover, the existing systems presented a barrier to leveraging other technologies that would allow Yarra Trams to provide better service to the travelling public.

“The new system uses highly available technology, which means it can be easily managed and supported. Yarra Trams will have ready access to skilled professionals to maintain the new system, which means less disruption to its service.”
