McAfee has agreed to acquire tenCube, a provider of locate, lock, backup and wipe services for mobile devices.
Singapore-based tenCube's WaveSecure service allows users to locate a lost phone, and remotely lock and (if necessary) wipe personal data from the device's internal memory and any expansion cards. WaveSecure also has a backup and restore function, which includes SMSes and the contents of the address book.
Following the acquisition, McAfee will add the tenCube technologies to its existing portfolio. The result, according to company officials, will be a single platform for the management and security of all device types for all markets from consumer to enterprise.
The company expects to support a wide range of mobile operating systems, including Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Mobile, iOS (iPhone/iPad), and Java powered feature phones. WaveSecure currently supports Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Mobile, and J2ME, while McAfee's Trust Digital system for enterprises covers Android, iOS, Symbian, Windows Mobile, Symbian and webOS.
"Mobile devices have become an extension of our lives," said tenCube CEO Darius Cheung. "Through this acquisition, McAfee can broaden its security capabilities and offer users protection and remote control of the phone whether it is in their possession or not. This means no more worries about the whereabouts of your phone or losing personal contacts, photos or messages."
There are more than 500,000 existing WaveSecure users.
