Google gets green light for AdMob acquisition

IT Industry - Deals

The US Federal Trade Commission has given the go-ahead for Google's acquisition of mobile advertising company AdMob.

Google agreed to acquire mobile advertising company AdMob last November in a $US750 million deal. The transaction was subject to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) review.

The FTC has voted 5-0 to end its investigation, allowing the acquisition to proceed.

The Commission noted that "the combination of the two leading mobile advertising networks raised serious antitrust issues, the agency's concerns ultimately were overshadowed by recent developments in the market, most notably a move by Apple Computer Inc. - the maker of the iPhone - to launch its own, competing mobile ad network."

The FTC also noted that other firms appear to be developing or acquiring smartphone platforms, and these firms would have a strong incentive to facilitate competition among mobile advertising networks.

"Though we have determined not to take action today, the Commission will continue to monitor the mobile marketplace to ensure a competitive environment and to protect the interests of consumers," the FTC statement read.
