VMware's takeover of Zimbra completed

IT Industry - Deals

The acquisition of open source email and collaboration developer Zimbra by virtualisation giant VMware has been completed.

In January, VMware signed a definitive agreement to acquire Zimbra from Yahoo!.

The deal has now been completed, and Zimbra has become part of VMware's cloud services organisation.

Zimbra Collaboration Suite, Zimbra Desktop and the Zimbra open source community will be supported by VMware, and Zimbra will be more deeply integrated with the VMware vSphere cloud infrastructure.

"The addition of Zimbra to our VMware vCloud offering brings small and medium size businesses as well as larger organisations a leading, email, calendaring and collaboration service paired with the flexibility and choice of private on-premise or public cloud deployments," said Brian Byun, VMware's vice president and general manager, cloud services.

One possibility is that VMware will offer preconfigured Zimbra software appliances that can be quickly and easily installed by customers.
