SpectrumData has won a half-million dollar storage contract with Geoscience Australia, Australia’s national geoscience research and information organisation.
Under the terms of the deal, SpectrumData will
deliver 2,500 3592 Gen II extra length media cartridges, each holding
up to 700 gigabytes of data, which it says “constitutes one of the
largest 3592 cartridge orders in Australia this year.”
SpectrumData director, Guy Holmes, said that, after recently
completing the restoration and recovery of the digital assets of the
Commonwealth Government, the company had been chosen by Geoscience to
supply “world class data storage products to help preserve this
valuable asset of national significance.”
Geoscience Australia provides information which enables the government
to make informed decisions about the allocation of resources, the
management of the environment and the safety of critical
infrastructure, and Holmes says “the 3592 cartridges will be used to
back-up copies of the organisation’s data in robotic tape libraries, to
be held in “offsite storage for archival and disaster recovery purposes
– ensuring the availability and protection of this valuable information
for generations to come.”
SpectrumData is a long standing supplier to Geoscience Australia, and
Holmes says the company has been heavily involved in completing the
restoration of the entire geophysical data collection held at
Geoscience Australia, including valuable seismic and geophysical data.
“Geoscience Australia placed significant emphasis on the technical
merits of the bids and SpectrumData’s supply history and proven success
in large scale data management was a crucial factor in the selection
process,” Holmes said.
